Skitch Alternative for Mac

Skitch is not a live product. Evernote discontinued it for Windows, iOS and Android in January 2016 and finally for Mac in December 2021, and the last meaningful release was version 2.9 in July 2020. It still launches for some people, but it receives no updates and no security patches — which on modern macOS is a problem waiting to happen.

Why use Notchy instead of Skitch?

  • Maintained against current macOS

Skitch has had no development for years. Anything relying on screen capture and Accessibility eventually breaks as macOS moves; Notchy ships regular updates.

  • Text capture that still works

Notchy's screen OCR pulls text off anything on screen — a step Skitch never did — and drops it into clipboard history.

  • A shelf for what you captured

The notch drop shelf stages screenshots and files while you move them somewhere else, in a fixed place on every display.

The honest verdict on Skitch

Skitch's problem is abandonment, not price — it was free and is now unmaintained. Shottr is the honest recommendation if you want a like-for-like annotation tool; Notchy is relevant only for OCR and staging files.

Skitch alternative — FAQ

Is Skitch discontinued?

Yes. Evernote ended support for Skitch on Windows, iOS and Android effective January 2016, and discontinued Skitch for Mac in December 2021. No further updates, security patches or feature work are being released.

Does Skitch still work on macOS?

It may launch, but the last meaningful update was v2.9 in July 2020, so compatibility with current macOS is not guaranteed and no fixes are coming if it breaks.

What should I replace Skitch with?

For annotation specifically, Shottr is pay-what-you-want and excellent, and CleanShot X is the paid option at $29. macOS's built-in screenshot tool (Cmd+Shift+5) handles capture and basic markup free.

Does Notchy annotate screenshots?

No. Notchy is not a screenshot annotator and doesn't replace Skitch's arrows and callouts — use Shottr or CleanShot X for that. Notchy covers OCR and staging captures.

Is it safe to keep using Skitch?

It isn't malicious, but an unmaintained app that takes screen-capture permissions gets riskier with every macOS release, and it will never be patched again. Moving to something maintained is the sensible call.
