Spectacle Alternative for Mac

Spectacle was many people's first Mac window manager, and it's still free and open source — but its author stepped back in October 2019 and it has had no maintainer since. On Apple Silicon it runs under Rosetta unless you compile it yourself, and each macOS release makes that a bigger gamble. Notchy's snapping is maintained against current macOS.

Why use Notchy instead of Spectacle?

  • Maintained against current macOS

Spectacle's last active development was 2019, so nothing has been tested against the macOS releases since. Notchy ships against current macOS with regular updates.

  • Native Apple Silicon

Getting Spectacle running natively on Apple Silicon means building it from source yourself; otherwise it's Rosetta. Notchy is a native build with no translation layer.

  • More than snapping

Spectacle did one job. Notchy snaps windows and adds clipboard history, a drop shelf, Pomodoro timer, AirPods battery and Now Playing controls in the notch — all free.

The honest verdict on Spectacle

Spectacle's problem isn't price, it's abandonment — an unmaintained Accessibility app is a slow-motion breakage. Rectangle is the honest recommendation if you want a pure Spectacle replacement; Notchy is right if you'd rather one maintained free app covered snapping and four other daily tools.

Spectacle alternative — FAQ

Is Spectacle still maintained?

No. After nearly a decade of on-and-off development the maintainer announced in October 2019 that he could no longer maintain it. The source remains free and open on GitHub for anyone to fork, but there is no active development.

Does Spectacle work on Apple Silicon?

It generally runs under Rosetta, but the only way to get it running natively on Apple Silicon is to compile the app yourself. Compatibility with newer macOS releases is not guaranteed.

What should I replace Spectacle with?

Rectangle is the closest direct successor — free, open source, actively maintained, and deliberately similar to Spectacle's shortcuts. Notchy is the better fit if you want snapping plus clipboard, files, timers and media in one app.

Is Notchy's snapping as configurable as Spectacle's was?

Not quite. Spectacle and Rectangle expose more granular window commands and shortcut mapping. Notchy covers halves, quarters, thirds and custom arrangements with remappable shortcuts, which suits most people but not power users.

Is Spectacle safe to keep using?

It isn't malicious — it's just unmaintained, which means no fixes when a macOS update breaks Accessibility behaviour or window handling. That risk grows with every release.

Is Notchy free like Spectacle?

Yes. Notchy is free with no paid tier, funded by optional donations. Unlike Spectacle it is not open source.
