Set Up a Dynamic Island on an External Mac Monitor
Use Notchy’s floating pill on an external monitor, iMac, or Mac mini. Configure the target display, position, and fullscreen behavior step by step.

You do not need a MacBook notch to use Notchy. On an external monitor or a Mac with a flat display edge, it draws a floating pill that holds the same player, timer, clipboard, and other controls. The important setup choices are which screen it belongs to, how far it sits below the edge, and what happens in fullscreen.
Start with the display you actually use
Connect the monitor and confirm it appears in macOS Displays settings. Open a window on that screen to check your arrangement. Then install and launch Notchy. Notchy requires macOS 13 Ventura or newer, so check the operating system as well as the hardware.
A Mac mini or Mac Studio has no built-in screen to host an island. An iMac or Studio Display has no camera cutout for it to grow around. The floating design is software, and it does not require a notch, a special monitor, or a change to the physical display.
Choose the target and tune the position
- Open Notchy’s settings and find its display and island appearance controls.
- Select the display on which you want the island.
- Use the floating pill design for a screen without a cutout.
- Adjust size and height offset until it clears the menu bar and stays easy to reach.
- Open the panel, then collapse it. Check both sizes before settling on the position.
Make one adjustment at a time. A comfortable collapsed pill may still expand over content if its panel is unusually large. Prefer the smallest panel that keeps your chosen tabs readable. The external monitor feature page explains the general compatibility.
Check fullscreen before relying on it
Try the island in an ordinary window, then in an app’s fullscreen Space. Notchy has fullscreen behavior settings; choose what suits your work. A player that is useful beside a document may be distracting over a presentation or a movie.
Screen sharing is another independent choice. Notchy includes a Hidden from Screen Capture switch for keeping its interface out of supported captures. Test with the recording or meeting tool you use before presenting, since the behavior you need is about the captured result, not just what appears on your own screen.
If it disappears after reconnecting a monitor
Confirm macOS recognizes the display first. Revisit the target display in Notchy, then test with a normal window outside fullscreen. If the monitor arrangement changed, an old placement can be inappropriate for the new screen dimensions. Reset the offset to a modest value and check the island again.
Compare notch and pill modes in the interactive demo to understand the silhouette difference. The demo demonstrates appearance; it cannot discover your actual displays or change their brightness.
A floating island is separate from display brightness control
The pill can appear on a monitor that does not support software brightness adjustment. Notchy’s external display control is a separate, opt-in feature for compatible DDC/CI monitors on Apple Silicon. Enabling it does not add DDC support to a monitor that lacks it.
Begin with the player or a timer. Once those are working on the right screen, add the tabs you use daily. This gives you the same notch workflow on a desk setup without turning the top of the monitor into another dashboard.
Common questions
Can I use Notchy on a Mac mini?
Yes. Notchy uses a floating pill on the connected monitor. A hardware notch is not required; the Mac must run a supported macOS release.
Does the floating pill require DDC/CI?
No. Showing the interface does not require DDC/CI. External monitor brightness control is a separate feature with its own hardware requirements.
