Ejecting drives on Mac — FAQ
What's the fastest way to eject a drive on a Mac?
With Notchy, you don't go looking for it at all. Plugging a drive in raises an island on the notch with an Eject button, and a clear "Safe to disconnect" confirms when macOS has actually finished.
Why does dragging to the Trash feel so wrong?
Because it is a 40-year-old metaphor that reads as "delete this". A labelled Eject button next to the drive that just appeared is simply clearer, and it's where your eyes already are.
How do I know when it's really safe to unplug?
The island waits for the unmount to complete and then confirms. That matters — pulling a drive while a write is still flushing is how filesystems get corrupted, and macOS's own feedback here is easy to miss.
Is this an Ejectify or Mountain alternative?
It covers the eject half. Those apps do more around mounting, hiding volumes and unmounting on sleep. If you only ever wanted a fast, obvious way to eject, Notchy has it built in and free.
