AirPods Battery Not Showing on Mac: What to Check
Missing an AirPods battery reading on your Mac? Check the connection, charging case, and system readout before trying a notch battery widget.

If AirPods battery levels do not appear on your Mac, start by checking whether the AirPods are connected and available to the system. A widget cannot reliably show information that the headphones have not supplied. Separate three problems: the device is missing, the device is connected but its battery reading is missing, or only the charging case is missing.
First, establish a working connection
Open Control Center, choose Bluetooth, and look for your AirPods. Try playing a short piece of audio through them. If the Mac does not list them, use System Settings → Bluetooth to pair them, following Apple’s instructions for your model. The pairing action differs between AirPods models, so do not assume every case has the same button.
Apple’s AirPods setup guide covers connecting an existing pair and pairing manually. Solve that connection issue before installing another battery utility.
Check which reading is actually absent
- Both earbuds missing: recheck the Bluetooth connection and whether the Mac is the device playing the audio.
- One earbud missing: place both buds in the case, check that they seat correctly, and reconnect.
- Case only missing: open the case with the buds nearby and check again. Case telemetry can be unavailable even while the earbuds play.
- A number seems stale: give the device a chance to report again after reconnecting, and compare with the system’s reading.
Do not interpret an unavailable case value as zero charge. Case and bud values are independent pieces of information, and their visibility can depend on the model and current connection state. A polished display should still make missing information understandable.
Use the notch for a quicker glance
Notchy’s AirPods Manager shows per-bud and case battery values when available and offers a quick connection action. The connection notification appears as an iOS-style island, so you do not have to keep opening a separate app merely to check a percentage.
Once the AirPods connect normally, enable the feature in Notchy and test by connecting them again. Check the left, right, and case values separately. The browser demo includes an AirPods notification with sample values; it does not read Bluetooth or your actual battery.
Connected, but sound is coming from the monitor?
Bluetooth connection and audio output selection are related but distinct. A device can be paired while the Mac sends audio elsewhere. Check the output in macOS sound controls, then play again. Notchy’s output switcher provides a quicker route once you have a working device.
If audio changes when you start a meeting, check both the meeting app’s settings and the system output. Repeatedly pairing the AirPods is unlikely to fix an app selecting a different speaker.
When to troubleshoot the app instead
If macOS shows a current reading and Notchy does not, update Notchy, reproduce the issue with only that pair connected, and record the macOS version, Notchy version, and AirPods model. Report which value is missing through support. That is much more actionable than “battery does not work.”
For a dedicated Bluetooth utility, compare options in our AirPods app guide. Choose based on the controls you need; no app should promise to invent a charge value the device is not reporting.
Common questions
Does a missing case battery mean the case is empty?
No. An unavailable reading and zero charge are different. Recheck with the case open and the buds nearby before treating an absent case value as a battery problem.
Can the Notchy browser demo show my real AirPods battery?
No. Its battery values are samples. The native Notchy app reads device information on the Mac when the connected hardware makes it available.
