When does the Claude Code usage limit reset?
On a Pro or Max plan, Claude Code runs on two limits: a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit that resets once a week. Claude chat and Claude Code draw from the same limits, so a long chat counts too. The exact reset time for both is on your account, and Claude Code shows it when you run /usage or hit a limit.
The 5-hour session limit
Anthropic describes it as a limit that resets every five hours, so it comes back during your day rather than at midnight. When you hit it, Claude Code's "You've hit your session limit" message tells you when the window resets. On Team and Enterprise seats the same five-hour window is rolling and is shared with Claude chat and Cowork.
The weekly limit
The weekly limit resets once a week on its usual day and time, which you can see in Settings → Usage on claude.ai. Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable. Switching models with /model doesn't get you past a session or weekly limit, because those are shared across all models.
What you can do right now
Wait for the reset; on Claude Code v2.1.234 or later it can wait and continue the interrupted task for you after the reset (see /rate-limit-options). Or run /usage-credits to turn on usage credits and keep going at pay-as-you-go rates. If you were mid-response, "Usage limit reached · wrapping up" means Claude Code is allowed to finish that step.
See the reset without asking
Notchy's AI Usage tab keeps your 5-hour and weekly bars on the Mac notch or menu bar with a countdown to each reset. Limit Warnings tell you as a limit runs low, when it runs out, and again when it resets, so you don't have to keep running /usage.

Claude Code limit resets — FAQ
How long until my Claude Code limit resets?
The session limit resets every five hours and the weekly limit once a week. Run /usage in Claude Code to see both bars and when they reset, or check Settings → Usage on claude.ai.
Does the weekly limit reset at the same time for everyone?
Anthropic doesn't publish one global reset day. Your weekly limit resets on its usual day and time, shown in Settings → Usage, so don't assume it matches a teammate's.
What is the "Reset for free" button?
Anthropic occasionally gives eligible plans a limit reset that puts your five-hour session or weekly limit back to full straight away. It lives under Resets in Settings → Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop, and on the message you see when you reach a limit. It isn't available inside Claude Code in the terminal or IDE, but because limits are shared, using it in the browser refills Claude Code too. It doesn't move your regular weekly reset.
Can I keep using Claude Code after hitting the limit?
Yes, if you turn on usage credits. Run /usage-credits, which opens Settings → Usage on claude.ai for Pro and Max, and requests past the limit switch to pay-as-you-go pricing. Otherwise you wait for the reset.
Will switching from Opus to Sonnet get me past the limit?
Not for the session or weekly limit, which covers every model. It does help after a model-specific message such as "You've hit your Opus limit": switch to a model outside that family with /model and keep working.
How do I get warned before I hit the limit?
Claude Code shows warnings as you approach a limit. To see the bars all the time, Notchy (free) puts them on the notch or menu bar and sends Limit Warnings as a session or weekly limit runs low, runs out and resets. It reads the Claude Code login already on your Mac; no API key.
