When does your Codex limit reset?
Codex with a ChatGPT sign-in is metered in windows. On Plus and Standard Business plans that means a five-hour window, and weekly limits can apply on top. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Your exact numbers and reset times are on the Codex usage dashboard, and /status shows them inside a running Codex CLI session.
Two windows, two resets
The five-hour window refills on its own clock and the weekly allowance on another, so you can be fine for the afternoon and still be near the end of your week. OpenAI's pricing page lists the five-hour estimates per model for Plus and Standard Business; Enterprise and Edu workspaces on flexible pricing have no fixed rate limits.
Where to see the reset time
The usage dashboard linked from Codex's pricing page lists your current limits and reset times. Inside an active Codex CLI session, /status shows what's left. If the number looks stuck, check both windows: a full weekly allowance blocks you even after the five-hour window refills.
When you hit the limit
A turn that's already running can finish, subject to fair use. After that, Plus and Pro users can buy extra credits to keep working without changing plan, and Business, Edu and Enterprise workspaces on flexible pricing can buy workspace credits. Or wait for the reset.
Keep the countdown on screen
Notchy's AI Usage tab reads the Codex CLI login already on your Mac and shows the used percentage of each window with its reset time on the notch, the menu bar or a desktop widget. Limit Warnings tell you as a limit runs low, runs out and resets.

Codex limit resets — FAQ
How often do Codex limits reset?
Plus and Standard Business plans have a five-hour window, and weekly limits may also apply. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. OpenAI adjusts these, so check the usage dashboard for your current limits and reset times.
How do I check my Codex usage?
Use the usage dashboard, or run /status in an active Codex CLI session to see your remaining limits. Notchy shows the same windows on your Mac without opening either.
Why hasn't my Codex usage reset?
Usually because the other window is the one that's full. The five-hour window can refill while the weekly allowance is still used up, and only the weekly reset fixes that.
Do Codex Fast modes use limits faster?
Yes. OpenAI says Fast and Ultrafast modes consume limits at different multipliers than Standard, and turns that generate images use included limits about 3 to 5 times faster on average.
Can I keep using Codex after the limit?
On Plus and Pro you can buy additional credits to keep working without upgrading. Signing in with an API key instead charges standard API rates.
Is there a Codex usage widget for Mac?
Notchy is a free Mac app that shows Codex, Claude Code, Cursor and other providers' limits on the notch, the menu bar or as a desktop widget. No API key, nothing uploaded.
