A Background Music Alternative without a virtual device
Background Music is the long-standing free, open-source answer to per-app volume on the Mac, licensed GPLv2. It installs a virtual audio device that sits between your apps and your speakers, which is how it can set a level per application and pause your music automatically when another app starts playing. Notchy's Sound Mixer takes a different route: Apple's own Core Audio process taps, applied only to the apps you actually adjust.

Why use Notchy instead of Background Music?
- No virtual output device to select
Background Music works by becoming your output device. Notchy leaves your real output selected and only taps the apps you change — apps at 100% get nothing in their audio path.
- Fails safe
Notchy's taps belong to the Notchy process, so if it quits or crashes macOS removes them and every app plays at full volume again. There is no leftover device to switch away from.
- A per-app equaliser
Beyond volume and mute, Notchy gives each app a three-band equaliser, opened from the chip beside the output picker in the notch.
- Where Background Music wins
It is open source, free under GPLv2, supports macOS 10.13 and later, and auto-pauses your music player when other audio starts — Notchy does none of the last. Notchy's mixer needs macOS 14.4.

The honest verdict on Background Music
Background Music is a respected open-source tool and the right choice on older macOS or if you want auto-pause. On macOS 14.4 or later, Notchy gives you per-app volume and EQ without a virtual device, alongside everything else in the notch.
Background Music alternative — FAQ
Is Background Music free?
Yes. It is free and open source under GPLv2 or later, per its GitHub repository.
How is Notchy different from Background Music?
Background Music routes audio through a virtual device it installs. Notchy uses Core Audio process taps (macOS 14.4+) on only the apps you adjust, and adds a per-app three-band EQ inside a notch app with many other tools.
Does Notchy auto-pause music when a video starts?
No. That auto-pause is a Background Music feature Notchy does not have.
Which works on older macOS?
Background Music, which supports macOS 10.13 and later. Notchy runs from macOS 13, but its Sound Mixer specifically needs macOS 14.4.
Is Notchy open source?
No. Notchy is free, with no purchase or subscription, but it is not open source. If an open-source licence matters to you, Background Music is the pick.
