A DynamicNotch Alternative for older Macs

DynamicNotch is one of the nicer free notch apps: spring physics that genuinely feel like the iPhone island, live activities for media, downloads, AirDrop, timers and screen recording, HUDs for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and battery, and 38 languages. Its one hard limit is the floor — macOS 14.6 — which rules out every Mac still on Ventura or early Sonoma. Notchy starts at macOS 13.

Why use Notchy instead of DynamicNotch?

  • Two macOS releases further back

macOS 13 Ventura and later, Intel included. If your Mac cannot take 14.6, DynamicNotch is not an option at all — and a notch app that will not launch is not a comparison, it is a blocker.

  • The same live activities, plus the working parts

Media with artwork and a visualiser, downloads, AirDrop, timers, focus, hotspot and recording islands are on both. Notchy adds clipboard history, a file shelf, OCR, stocks, AI spend, a terminal and system stats.

  • Signed and notarized

Notchy ships a signed, notarized build with Sparkle updates. A GPL project distributing unsigned releases makes you talk Gatekeeper down on every install.

  • DynamicNotch wins on motion tuning

Its animation presets and adjustable notch geometry go further than Notchy's, and if the feel of the island is the whole reason you want one, it is worth trying — on a Mac that can run it.

The honest verdict on DynamicNotch

DynamicNotch is good work and free, and on a current Mac it is a fair fight decided by which feature list you want. The decision gets made for you if you are on Ventura or early Sonoma: it will not run, and Notchy will.

DynamicNotch alternative — FAQ

Is DynamicNotch free?

Yes, free and open source under GPLv3, actively developed. It requires macOS 14.6 or later.

Will DynamicNotch run on Ventura?

No. 14.6 is a Sonoma point release, so Ventura and early Sonoma Macs cannot run it. Notchy supports macOS 13 and later.

Does Notchy work on Macs with no notch?

Yes, as a floating island — the same as DynamicNotch does — including Mac mini, Studio and any external display.

Which has better animations?

DynamicNotch is the more configurable of the two on motion, with animation presets and adjustable notch dimensions. Notchy's motion is tuned rather than exposed.

Can I run both?

Technically yes, but two apps drawing over the same notch will fight for the space. Pick one.
