A NotchBar Alternative with a panel behind it

NotchBar takes the dead strip either side of the cutout and puts something there: CPU, memory, storage, battery and network, the current track with artwork, and the active app. It is free, AGPLv3, and needs macOS 14.5. Notchy treats that strip as the lid of a whole panel instead — the same readouts, plus everything they lead to — and runs from macOS 13.

Why use Notchy instead of NotchBar?

  • The strip opens into something

A stat beside the notch tells you a number. Notchy's pill expands into cards — the drive that is filling up, the process on the port, the clipboard entry you need, the file you dragged in — so the glance has somewhere to go.

  • macOS 13, not 14.5

NotchBar's floor cuts out Ventura and early Sonoma. Notchy supports macOS 13 and later on Intel and Apple Silicon.

  • More sensors than the widget row

CPU, GPU, memory, network, SMC temperature, battery health, boot disk and every mounted external, plus Wi-Fi strength in dBm and the network password on request.

  • NotchBar is smaller on purpose

If a permanently visible stat row is the entire ask and you do not want a panel at all, NotchBar is the lighter answer and it is free.

The honest verdict on NotchBar

NotchBar is a neat use of wasted pixels and free. Notchy wants the same pixels for a door rather than a dashboard — and supports the Macs NotchBar's floor leaves out.

NotchBar alternative — FAQ

Is NotchBar free?

Yes — free and open source under AGPLv3, in active development. It requires macOS 14.5 or later.

Does Notchy show stats beside the notch?

Yes, on the collapsed pill, and it expands into the full system card with drives, temperature and network when you want the detail.

Which uses less memory?

NotchBar, almost certainly — it is a widget strip and Notchy is a suite. Notchy publishes measured idle CPU and battery figures so you can decide whether the difference matters on your Mac.

Can either reach menu bar icons under the notch?

Notchy can — it lists every menu-bar extra inside the panel and presses the real one, including items the cutout is covering. That is not something NotchBar does.

What macOS does Notchy need?

macOS 13 Ventura or later.
