Mac Clipboard History — FAQ
Can my Mac play a sound when I copy something?
Yes, since Notchy 1.0.200. Turn on Capture Sound in Settings → Clipboard and you hear a short click each time a new copy lands in your clipboard history. It starts off.
Does Mac have a built-in clipboard history?
No. By default, macOS only remembers the very last thing you copied. To see your clipboard history, you need a third-party clipboard manager app.
How do I see clipboard history on Mac?
With Notchy, simply swipe down on your MacBook notch (or the floating pill on notchless Macs) to instantly reveal a visual history of the text, links, and images you’ve copied.
Is Notchy an alternative to Maccy?
Yes. While Maccy and CopyClip are popular options, Notchy provides a gorgeous clipboard history manager as part of a full notch app, and it doesn’t clutter your menu bar because it lives inside the notch.
Does Notchy track what I copy?
No. Notchy is built with a strict privacy-first architecture. Your clipboard data stays entirely local on your Mac, is never uploaded, and can clear itself after a delay, on sleep or on lock. The only telemetry is an anonymous active-install count, switchable off in About → Privacy.
Can I pin clipboard items?
Yes. Pin any entry and it floats to the top of the shelf, survives the history cap, is kept when you hit Clear, and since v1.0.172 it also survives a restart — ideal for snippets you paste all day.
Is my clipboard history written to disk?
Up to 1.0.178, only the items you pin. From 1.0.179, “Keep History After Quitting” (on by default) writes the rolling history too, owner-only in Application Support, with copies from ignored apps and password managers never recorded in the first place. Turn it off and history lives in memory only.
Can I organise saved clips into lists?
Since 1.0.179, saved clips can go into your own named lists, next to the default Pinned list — handy for addresses, replies and code you paste every week.
Does Notchy sync the clipboard between Macs?
From 1.0.179, optionally: saved text clips and their lists sync between your Macs through iCloud. It's off by default, the rolling history and images never sync, and there is no iPhone app or account.
Is it safe to use with a password manager?
Yes. Notchy honors the standard concealed and transient pasteboard markers used by 1Password, Keychain Access and other password managers — secret copies are flagged by those apps and Notchy never records them into history.
