Mac Focus Mode — FAQ
How do I quickly toggle Focus Mode on Mac?
Open the notch and use the Focus card: it shows the mode that is currently on and lists the modes you have set up. macOS gives third-party apps no API for SETTING a Focus, so switching runs an Apple Shortcut whose single action is “Set Focus” — Notchy matches those by name, and you can map one per mode in Settings › Notifications › Focus Modes. A mode with no shortcut opens System Settings instead of pretending to switch.
Does Notchy sync with my iPhone’s Focus states?
Yes — because the switch happens through macOS itself (an Apple Shortcut running “Set Focus”), the resulting Focus state syncs across your iCloud devices exactly as if you had flipped it in Control Center.
Do notifications stay quiet while Focus is on?
Yes. While Do Not Disturb or any Focus mode is active, Notchy suppresses its own low-priority islands — download alerts, device connections, update notices — so nothing pops while you’re heads-down. Volume, brightness, caffeine, and low-battery alerts still show, because you triggered them or need to see them.
Is Notchy a free alternative to other focus apps?
Yes, and it is honest about the limits. Reading which Focus is active, and listing every mode you have created, needs Full Disk Access — macOS keeps that database protected. Grant it and the full list appears; without it Notchy can only tell that some Focus is on.
