A maintained iGlance Alternative for Mac

iGlance did the job for years — CPU graph and temperature, memory, network, fan speed, battery notifications, all free under GPLv3. Its repository now carries a plain warning that the project is no longer under active development, which for a tool that reads SMC sensors is the point at which a new macOS release eventually breaks something and nobody fixes it. Notchy reads the same sensors, ships updates most weeks, and is free.

Why use Notchy instead of iGlance?

  • Still being worked on

Notchy shipped ten releases in the fortnight this page was written. A system monitor is exactly the kind of app that needs that: SMC keys, private frameworks and permission rules move under it with every macOS update.

  • The same readings

CPU load and temperature from the SMC, memory pressure, network throughput, fan speed, battery health and low-battery alerts at levels you choose — plus GPU, drive capacity and Wi-Fi detail iGlance did not carry.

  • Off the menu bar

iGlance's readouts sit in the menu bar, which on a notched MacBook is the row the cutout is already eating. Notchy's live in the notch panel, and it can reach or hide the menu bar items too.

  • Signed and notarized

A notarized build with in-app updates, rather than a right-click-to-open workaround on an unmaintained release.

The honest verdict on iGlance

iGlance was good and is now unattended, which is a poor foundation for something that reads hardware sensors. Stats is the closest maintained menu-bar replacement; Notchy is the one that also puts the numbers in the notch and brings the rest of the app with it.

iGlance alternative — FAQ

Is iGlance still maintained?

No. The repository states that the project is no longer under active development. It remains free and open source under GPLv3 and still installs via Homebrew, but nobody is fixing what macOS breaks.

Does Notchy show fan speed and temperature?

Yes — SMC readings for CPU temperature in °C or °F, and fan speeds, on the system card.

Does it do battery notifications?

Yes, at the levels you set: low, charging and full-charge islands, plus battery health with cycles and capacity.

Is there a free alternative that is not Notchy?

Stats by exelban is free, MIT, actively maintained and covers more modules than iGlance did. It is a menu bar app rather than a notch one — there is a full comparison on its own page.

What macOS does Notchy need?

macOS 13 Ventura or later, Intel or Apple Silicon.
