A free WiFi Explorer Alternative for your own network

WiFi Explorer is a proper wireless scanner: every network in range, channel overlap graphs, signal-to-noise ratings, WiFi 4 through 7 across 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz, CSV export. It is $19.99 and needs macOS 13.5. Most people opening it are not surveying a site — they want to know whether their own signal is bad. Notchy answers that from the notch for nothing.

Why use Notchy instead of WiFi Explorer?

  • Be clear what this replaces

Notchy does not scan neighbouring networks, chart channel overlap or export a survey. It reports the network you are on. If you need the survey, WiFi Explorer is the tool and it is worth its price.

  • Your own link, in full

RSSI in dBm with a bar reading on the same thresholds, negotiated link rate, channel and band, security type, local IPv4 and public IP — the numbers macOS makes you Option-click or open Wireless Diagnostics for.

  • And the password

Reveal the current network's password from your keychain behind the system's admin prompt. Not something a scanner does, and usually the actual reason you went looking.

  • Free, on more Macs

No purchase, and macOS 13 rather than 13.5 — a small gap, but Notchy also covers Intel Macs and brings fifty other tools with it.

The honest verdict on WiFi Explorer

WiFi Explorer is a specialist tool at a fair price and Notchy is not trying to replace it. But if $19.99 was about to be spent on answering 'is my Wi-Fi actually bad', the notch card answers that for free — and hands you the password while it is there.

WiFi Explorer alternative — FAQ

How much is WiFi Explorer?

$19.99 on the Mac App Store, requiring macOS 13.5 or later. A Pro edition is sold separately. The developer states the app collects no data.

Can Notchy scan other Wi-Fi networks?

No. It reports the network your Mac is associated with. Scanning the environment, channel-overlap graphs and CSV export are WiFi Explorer features with no Notchy equivalent.

Does Notchy show signal in dBm?

Yes, with the standard mapping: around -50 and better is full, -60 good, -70 fair, -80 poor. The bars are drawn from the same thresholds as the number.

Why does my network name not appear?

Since macOS Sonoma the SSID is gated behind Location Services even though signal figures stay readable. Notchy says that is what happened instead of showing a blank.

Is Notchy free?

Yes — no trial, licence key or subscription, on macOS 13 Ventura and later.
