A Latest Alternative with Homebrew built in
Latest, by Max Langer, is a small, free, GPL-licensed app that checks whether your apps are up to date — Mac App Store apps and the ones that update through Sparkle — shows their release notes in one uniform view, and lets you update them from there. It is well made and honest about scope. Notchy's Packages tab does the same check from the notch and adds the third update system most developer Macs have: Homebrew.

Latest is a lovely single-purpose app, and if you want release notes and nothing else, keep it. If Homebrew is part of how you install software, Notchy is the one list that covers all three update systems — free, in the notch.
