A Free KeyBell Alternative for Mac

KeyBell is a long-running Mac App Store app with more than 25 sound profiles across mechanical keyboards, typewriters, electronics, fun sounds and mouse clicks. It can switch profiles per app and only play when headphones are connected, and the full set unlocks with a Lifetime Access purchase. Notchy's Typing Sounds are smaller in scope and entirely free.

Why use Notchy instead of KeyBell?

  • Nothing to unlock

Every style, the custom sound and the per-app rules are free in Notchy.

  • Per-app, both directions

Only in Chosen Apps or Except Chosen Apps — pick whichever list is shorter.

  • Pause from the keyboard

A shortcut you set pauses and resumes the sounds without opening Settings.

  • Where KeyBell is better

25+ profiles, a different profile per app, mouse-click sounds and headphone- or speaker-only modes. Notchy plays one style everywhere it's allowed.

The honest verdict on KeyBell

KeyBell has the bigger sound library and finer per-app control, and it runs on older macOS. Notchy is the free, no-unlock option that lives in the notch app you already use.

KeyBell alternative — FAQ

Is KeyBell free?

It's a free download with a Lifetime Access in-app purchase for the full feature set. Notchy's Typing Sounds have no paid tier.

Can Notchy play only with headphones?

No — that's a KeyBell feature. Notchy plays through whatever output is active, and you can pause it with a shortcut.

Can Notchy use a different sound per app?

No. It chooses which apps play the sound, not which sound each app plays.

Which macOS versions?

KeyBell lists macOS 11 or later. Notchy needs macOS 13 Ventura or later.

Does either app see what I type?

Both need to notice key presses. Notchy only checks the kind of key — normal, Space, Return or Delete — and stores nothing; password fields are hidden from it by macOS.
