An AltTab Alternative that lives in the notch

AltTab brings the Windows switcher to macOS — thumbnails of every window, one keystroke away — and it does that better than Notchy does, because that is the whole app. Notchy comes at the same problem from the other end: a launcher and command palette in the notch that finds the app by name, opens what is not running, and brings forward what is.

Why use Notchy instead of AltTab?

  • Search is free here

AltTab's free build is a full window switcher; search, the App Icons and Titles display styles, auto-sizing thumbnails and more than a couple of shortcuts are the Pro purchase at $9.99, or $24.99 for the lifetime licence. Notchy's launcher and ⌘K command palette are search-first and cost nothing.

  • Launch and switch in one place

AltTab switches between windows that already exist. Notchy's launcher also opens the app that is not running yet, groups apps into folders, and puts the same list behind a hotkey, a knock on the chassis or a click on the notch.

  • Notarized and signed

Notchy is a signed, notarized build — no right-click-to-open dance, no Gatekeeper warning to talk yourself past.

  • It is not a window manager replacement

If you want per-window thumbnails and Windows-exact Alt-Tab behaviour, AltTab is the better tool and Notchy does not pretend otherwise. Notchy's window work is snapping — halves, quarters and thirds by drag or hotkey.

The honest verdict on AltTab

AltTab is excellent at the one thing it does, and its free tier is generous. If you specifically want Windows-style window switching, buy it. If what you actually wanted was to get to an app fast, Notchy's launcher and command palette do that from the notch without a Pro tier.

AltTab alternative — FAQ

Is AltTab free?

Yes, AltTab is free and open source on GitHub, with a 14-day trial of Pro features. Pro is $9.99 one-time for the current major version, or $24.99 for a lifetime licence covering all future updates, with three devices per licence.

Does Notchy do window thumbnails?

No. Notchy's launcher is a name-and-icon list with search, not a live thumbnail grid. If seeing each window's content is the point, AltTab is the right choice.

What does Notchy do for windows?

Snapping — drag a window to an edge or use a hotkey for halves, quarters and thirds — plus a command palette that reaches every Notchy action with a few keystrokes.

Can I use both?

Yes, and plenty of people should. AltTab for switching, Notchy for the notch. They register different shortcuts and do not conflict.

What macOS does Notchy need?

macOS 13 Ventura or later, Intel or Apple Silicon. AltTab's site does not state a minimum version.
