BetterDisplay Alternative: Brightness Without the Menu Bar Item
BetterDisplay is a serious display toolkit. If you only ever wanted your brightness keys to work on an external monitor, Notchy already does that.
Why use Notchy instead of BetterDisplay?
- The same DDC/CI path
Apple Silicon's IOAVService drives the monitor, so F1 and F2 behave on the external screen exactly as they do on the built-in one.
- No extra app in the menu bar
It rides along with the notch app you already run, and the level shows in the same island as volume and keyboard backlight.
- Free, with no Pro tier
Every Notchy feature is in the free download — there's no upgrade that unlocks the display control later.
- Be honest about the trade
Virtual displays, HiDPI overrides and resolution control are BetterDisplay's territory and Notchy doesn't compete there. Brightness is the overlap.

BetterDisplay alternative — FAQ
Is Notchy a BetterDisplay alternative?
For DDC brightness on your hardware keys, yes — that's the reason most people install BetterDisplay, and Notchy does it as part of the notch app you're already running. BetterDisplay goes much further than that though, with virtual displays, HiDPI and resolution overrides; if you use those, keep it.
What does BetterDisplay do that Notchy doesn't?
Virtual and dummy displays, custom HiDPI resolutions, per-display colour and picture-in-picture streaming. Notchy is not trying to be a display engine — it drives brightness over DDC/CI and gets out of the way.
Does Notchy control external monitor brightness with the F1/F2 keys?
Yes, through Apple Silicon's IOAVService. Your existing brightness keys work on a DDC/CI monitor and the level shows in the same notch HUD as the built-in display.
Can I run both?
You can, but two apps fighting over the same DDC channel is a good way to get erratic brightness. Pick whichever one owns brightness for you and turn the feature off in the other.
